Battery packs that will recharge your smartphone (in addition to powering the motor) may seem like marketing hype -- until you find yourself lost 20 miles from home with a dead phone and no easy way to call for help. 6v, 3a charger (all provided in the box), seems like a great solution to those problems. One Amazon reviewer gave it a perfect score.

Although the USB port is the primary differentiator here, it is not simply about having additional capacity.

Specifications and Construction Quality

HAIPACKBA operates nominally at 48 volts, with a 25 ah capacity. That adds up to 1200 wh. that is approximately 160 wh greater than a standard 20 ah pack operating at the same voltage. As listed, this pack uses Grade A lithium-ion cells. therefore, instead of being salvaged or second-rate, you receive cells made by a reputable cell manufacturer.

Dimensionally, the HAIPACKBA measures 14.5 x 3.54 x 5 inches. Weighing in at 13 lbs., the battery is certainly not lightweight. However, at 25 ah at 48 v, the pack is far from "ultralight." The case is waterproof, features anti-vibration pads, contains a power switch, an LED status indicator, and a secure key lock. Also included are a battery mount and both male and female xt60 connectors for discharging.

Included in the packaging are the battery itself, a battery mount, a male xt60 adapter, the 54.6-volt, 3-amp charger and two keys for securing the safe lock. That is essentially a complete start-up kit. Connect the charger to the wall outlet, connect the charger to the battery and allow approximately 4 hours for the battery to be fully charged from empty. Although not extremely rapid charging, a 3 amp charge rate provides a good balance. With a 2 amp charger, you can expect to spend six hours waiting for a full recharge. Using a 5 amp charger will provide you with a recharge time of slightly more than two-and-One-half hours.

Bms (battery Management System) and Safety Features

The bms controls overcharge protection, over-discharge protection, short-circuit protection and over-temperature protection. Those are the four areas all acceptable battery management systems must cover. The 50a discharge rating on this bms allows you to discharge the pack at up to 2000 watts (with a 48 v motor) without exceeding its rating. On extreme inclines, even though your motor is producing close to 50 amps for periods of several minutes at a time, there will always be some buffer available in the event of surges. A 30 amp bms would immediately shut off the pack when needed most.

One of the bullets lists a 20a controller current limit. however, it states that the bms has a 50a limitation. Consider the bms as the limiting factor based on the pack's actual capabilities. Be sure to check your controller to see if it has limitations. If your controller is capable of handling more current than your bms (which we hope is true), then your bms is your hard cap at 50a.

Misaligned bms and controller ratings are often referred to as a "silent killer" of e-bikes. When the bms turns off due to exceeding the allowed current rating, the controller believes the battery has failed and therefore displays nothing except for a "dead battery" indication. You then push your bike up an incline with little-to-no warning.

The included key lock makes it difficult for someone to remove the pack casually. The waterproof construction protects against rain and puddles, but this does not mean it is submersible. In fact, if you drop this in a creek or other body of water, your warranty will expire very quickly. The power switch shuts off discharge at the pack level so you don't have to dig around in your bag to unplug xt60 cables when transporting your bike.

What the bms specification sheet doesn't mention is how quickly it responds to faulty conditions. An excellent bms should disconnect within milliseconds of detecting a short circuit. Lower cost bms units respond much slower, and that brief delay can cause serious cell damage. Unfortunately, HAIPACKBA did not include response time specifications in their documentation. therefore you'll have to assume that they used quality components (and therefore sufficient ratings) based solely on their published 50a rating.

Everyday Convenience and Smartphone Power-up Via USB Port

As mentioned previously, the pack comes equipped with an external USB port that allows you to charge your smartphone directly from the pack. Most other e-bike battery packs do not include such functionality. To enable direct charging of devices from the pack requires inclusion of a buck converter inside the bms that steps down the pack's voltage (i.e., 48V) to 5V without destroying your device. HAIPACKBA has done exactly that. The USB output port is located on the exterior of the pack behind a rubber flap and thus you don't have to open the waterproof seal of the pack to charge.

Practically speaking, this allows you to keep your phone charged throughout extended rides without needing to carry an additional portable power bank. The approximate energy stored in today's smartphone battery is approximately equal to 12wh. Based on prior discussions regarding range estimates for your pack size (1200Wh) and assuming normal usage patterns for both charging your phone and assisting your motor operation simultaneously. we estimate that you can safely top-off your phone's battery (from zero to full charge) three or four times per ride cycle without adversely impacting your ride range by even one mile.

That said, this feature is critical when you're planning to perform extended day-long rides and rely on your phone for route-finding/navigation purposes, etc., and you are unable to reach civilization for assistance if your phone fails. Dead phones in remote areas can become a life-threatening situation! The USB port eliminates that concern completely!

Use it for what it was designed for - i.e., charging mobile phones! Don't attempt to power anything else with this port...like running a mini-fridge off of it! There will be insufficient amperage available to prevent overheating of the buck converter.

Compatibility: Will This Battery Fit My Conversion Kit?

With respect to Compatibility with various e-bike conversion kits, the 5-pin base and female xt60 discharge ports indicate that this battery should fit with most after-market e-bike motors. Specifically, HAIPACKBA references Bafang and Voilamart in their listing. these are two of the most popular brands for conversion kits sold on Amazon. Additionally, since this pack runs at 48 volts nominal (and therefore can deliver maximum performance with most Bafang mid-drive platforms which operate at 48 volts maximum), and since most Bafang mid-drives fall into either the bbshd or bbs02 category. both of these categories require maximum output of 2000 watts and therefore fall well below the 50a discharge rating provided by HAIPACKBA.

The pack includes an estimated power range of 200 watts through 2000 watts. Therefore, with regard to most conversions in the 500 watt through 1000 watt range. this pack offers plenty of headroom.

As noted earlier, you will need to measure your frame tube diameter before ordering the included battery mount to ensure that it fits properly. The mount is adjustable but not universal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the This product, answered briefly.

What is My Expected Range with This Pack?

Your expected mileage varies greatly depending upon multiple factors including rider weight, terrain type(s) ridden upon and assisted level(s) utilized. Generally speaking, you can anticipate obtaining between 40 to 50 miles of riding distance when traveling on relatively flat terrain utilizing moderate levels of assist. Utilizing full-throttle operation will reduce your estimated range to approximately 25-30 miles.

May I Utilize an Alternate Charger with This Pack?

Provided that your alternate charger delivers power at 54.6 volts and utilizes an xt60 connector identical to that used by HAIPACKBA. yes, you may use an alternate charger with this pack. Do not use any charger designed for LiFePO4 cells on this pack as it will damage the cells due to different charge profiles between NMC & LiFePO4 cells.

Will Utilizing This USB Port Significantly Deplete My Pack's Overall Capacity?

No. The buck converter utilized by HAIPACKBA isolates the USB charging circuit from the primary pack discharge circuitry. Therefore, whether you charge your phone or utilize your motor-assist function, charging your phone represents less than one percent of your total capacity at full discharge. You will lose virtually no range due to using this USB charging function.

Is My Pack Waterproof or Just Water Resistant?

HAIPACKBA's listing states that their case is waterproof but treats it like a water resistant case as well. Do not submerge your pack in water under any circumstances if you wish to keep your warranty valid.
