When ordering you are able to pick either your desired voltage (36V, 48v, 52v), and your desired amp-hours (13Ah through 30Ah). The 48V 30Ah version we're reviewing provides 1440 watt-hours in a case that measures 15.6 inches long by 3.7 inches wide by 6.1 inches high. That length measurement makes it difficult to place in a frame triangle.
Specs and build quality
The Varstrom 48V 30Ah is a rectangular case battery, neither a shark nor dolphin style battery, so it doesn't offer any standard mounting patterns. Therefore, if you are purchasing this battery, you will need to attach it to a rear-rack or develop a bracket yourself based upon the dimensions provided below. Please review these dimensions prior to making your purchase as the battery is approximately 15.6 inches long and will likely not fit into most frame triangles.
While Varstrom states there are over 1000 charges, they don't specify what type of cells were used to create their battery, however, due to the low price point for a battery of this size, it would be unlikely for them to utilize name brand Samsung or LG cells. However, generic 18650 cells should suffice for most applications, assuming the BMS was properly manufactured.
Varstrom lists both the number of amps the BMS can handle as well as the continuous wattage of the BMS (based upon the continuous amperage rating). Based upon the 30ah designation for the 30ah model, the maximum continuous amperage of the BMS would be 30 amperes. This translates to a maximum continuous wattage of approximately 1440 watts (using the formula p = a * v). Assuming an average efficiency rate of approximately 75% (as most ebike motors require at least 250w to operate efficiently), a hub motor rated at 750W or lower and/or a mid-drive rated at approximately 500w or less would be suitable. Additionally, using a 1000w+ setup may result in additional stress on the BMS (due to excessive continuous usage beyond its designed capabilities).
For higher power setups greater than 30 amps continuous, you may find the 40 amp BMS designation on the other two models (the smaller capacities in the 52v model) would be a better option.
BMS, range, and real world Performance
The integrated BMS protects against four types of failure:
- overcharge
- over-discharge
- overcurrent
- short circuit
In addition, while nothing exotic here, no smart phone apps, no bluetooth monitoring capability, no cell level balancing information. Just simply protecting the battery from damage during operation.

Using our example of a typical commuter bike with a 750W hub motor consuming approximately 20 wh/mile (which is roughly equivalent to a moderate paced commute with steady assistance) the approximate Range would be about 70 miles. We think this is an accurate representation of real world Performance, not overly optimistic like some manufacturers' claims based upon ideal laboratory conditions.
Options for your controller
If you happen to have a 48v ebike controller, then you'll be happy to know that this battery will work directly without any modifications. Of course if you've got a controller that operates at 52v then you can still purchase this exact same item but select the alternative capacity designation (i.e., selecting the capacity/designation that represents a 52v ebike application). Likewise, if you've got a 36V ebike controller then you could select the applicable 36V capacity designation but keep in mind your overall power output will be reduced compared to the higher voltage options.
