A conversion kit is the easiest way to transform a regular bicycle into an electric bicycle. The DDYOOK 48V 1000W front hub kit, is among the more aggressive kits available in the budget category. As a 1000 watt front wheel intended for 700C bicycles (road and hybrid), it represents a significant amount of power relative to the rest of its competitors. In comparison to other kits that typically top out at 500w, this kit has significantly more horsepower. Before opening the box, this is evident simply from looking at the Specs. I reviewed the product specifications, along with comments made by customers to determine if that additional power was worth the compromises.

Specifications and Build Quality

As stated in the Specs section, the main features of this kit are:

  • 1000 w brushless gearless hub motor
  • running on a 48 v system
  • a gearless hub motor has no internal planetary gears, which results in less maintenance requirements, however, it also creates a larger/heavier motor, which consumes more amperage while under load.
  • Max speed: 45-55 km/h (fastest for a front wheel conversion)
  • the aluminum alloy wheel is rated for riders up to 264 pounds.
  • rim pre-laced onto the motor (no spoke work required).
  • LCD display shows:
  • real time speed
  • average & Max speed
  • totals miles
  • battery level
  • dual mode controller supports both Hall effect & non-Hall effect sensors
  • cruise control function allows you to maintain a constant speed without holding down the throttle.
  • five levels of assist (dial-in how much assistance you desire).
  • customizable display.

At this price point, the build quality is adequate. Not exceptional. The display is plastic, the wiring is standard connector types and easy to trace, and the brake levers contain a power cutoff switch so that when you pull the lever the motor disengages. This is a very important safety feature since this unit puts out 1000w of power. Unfortunately there is no torque arm included.

Installation and Compatibility

This kit is designed for use with 700C sized tires. This is the same size used on most road bicycles and hybrid bicycles. Since it arrives as a complete front wheel, you attach the motor to your forks. The major advantage to this configuration is that it makes installing easier than a rear wheel conversion. When using a rear wheel conversion you would be dealing with a cassette, derailleur etc. However, attaching a heavy front wheel increases the weight distribution of your bike forward, creating a slightly stiffer feel during slow turns.

The electrical wiring of this kit could not be any easier. The only thing you'll connect to the controller is the motor cable, throttle, brake levers and display. Each wire has been color-coded making it extremely simple to hook everything up. Depending on your mechanical aptitude and familiarity with working with cable routing, expect to spend an entire day installing.

Please take special care when choosing a torque arm. A 1000w front wheel conversion kit creates a tremendous amount of twisting force on your fork's dropouts. Without proper support (torque arm) your motor can begin chewing into your dropouts over time. Please add a torque arm to any front wheel conversion kit that has this type of power output.

In addition to purchasing this kit, you will need to purchase a 48v battery. All conversion kits arrive with no battery.

What Amazon Buyers Are Saying

There are currently 44 reviews on amazon for this product with a average rating of 3.9 stars. There seems to be two camps of opinions about this kit. On one hand there is a large contingent of users praising the extreme amounts of power provided by this kit, the clean operation of the gearless motor and its overall value compared to similar products. Many users complimented the kit stating it had more "oomph" than they expected based upon the advertised power output of 1000 watts. Some buyers noted their experience with the product was such that they were able to achieve speeds faster than they anticipated based upon published specifications.

On the negative side, several buyers mentioned experiencing problems with either the display or controller receiving loose connections. While frustrating, these issues are somewhat common within this price bracket and may easily be resolved via minor adjustments.

Buyer complaints relating directly to performance revolve primarily around three areas:

Firstly, some buyers indicated their experience with regards to operating speed and stability exhibited instability on high-speed descents due to increased mass at the front of the bike. Secondly, a couple of buyers expressed concerns regarding safety related specifically to the lack of a torque arm on this kit. They emphasized the importance of purchasing a separate torque arm for protection against excessive wear and tear caused by torque generated by this powerful motor.

Overall, we believe it is prudent to view this product as having received decent but not spectacular reviews. Based on user experiences, please plan to add a torque arm and apply threadlocker to protect against loosening prior to installing.

Who Should Purchase This Kit?

If you're looking for an affordable option that provides significant amounts of power to convert your road or hybrid bike into an e-bike and don't mind performing a little work to create a safe platform for riding, then this DDYOOK 1000w kit should fit your needs perfectly. Whether you want rapid acceleration, strong hill-climbing ability or just want to drastically alter the personality of your bike, this kit provides those capabilities. Additionally, with an LCD display, cruise control function and five levels of assist provide daily usability for riding your bike.

Avoid this kit if you're interested in a legitimate street setup or simply prefer plug-and-play kits. A 1000w front wheel motor far exceeds what you'd require for casual commutes and poses a risk of damaging your fork without sufficient reinforcement (i.e., torque arms). Frequently Asked Questions

Does the DDYOOK kit include a battery?

No. The kit includes the motor wheel, controller, throttle, brake levers, display & wiring only. You must purchase your own 48 volt battery.

Does this kit fit my bike?

Only if you have a bike with standard dropouts on your fork and use a 700C tire size. Most road and hybrid bikes fall into this category. Consult your fork width & dropout type before purchasing.

Is this kit street legal to ride on public roads?

Probably not in most places. At 45-55 km/h and 1000 watts of power output, it exceeds typical ebike limits for both speed & power output. Consider using off-road or private land only unless familiar with local laws.

How fast will the DDYOOK 1000w kit go?

According to listed specifications: 45-55 km/h depending on rider weight, tires pressure & state of charge of battery. Most riders will achieve lower end of this range under flat conditions.

Am I required to install a torque arm?

Yes and this is the #1 recommendation to protect against unintended damage to your fork due to high amounts of twist caused by a large front hub motor.
